"The colours are so strong in real life, changing second by second — I have to tone them down so people can absorb them."

On toning down the impossible

What happens when the light in front of you is so vivid, so alive, that a faithful reproduction would overwhelm anyone who looks at it?

March 2026

The lake at first light, January

I arrived before sunrise and stayed until the colours collapsed into grey. What happened in between is what photography is for.

Why I shoot with the Fujifilm X-T2

Eight years on, the same camera. There are reasons — and they have nothing to do with specifications.

Mark Lewensohn

I photograph the natural world — lakes, skies, light in transition. The images begin in moments of almost unbearable colour and aliveness, and my work is the process of bringing them to a form that can be lived with.

All photographs are original works, created and owned entirely by me. I do not use heavy post-processing. The colours you see have been toned down from what I witnessed.

Based in the Chicago area. Available for select commissions and exhibitions.
